Tomas Chel Cauich

Family lime farming for several generations

PRODUCER & TERROIR

A FAMILY FARM FOR FOUR GENERATIONS

Having been introduced to the art of planting by his grandfather, Tomas now grows avocados and several citrus fruit varieties (including oranges, lemons and mandarins) on his 38-hectare property in Oxkutzcab, Mexico. As someone who loves his land, the natural world and family, he is sharing his expertise with his sons and incorporating more environmentally-friendly methods into his work.

I’m now proud to say that I sell clean produce because I’m sure they won’t cause any harm to people’s health when they are sold to consumers.

TERROIR

The Yucatan region’s usually high year-round temperatures and tropical climate help the citrus fruit develop to perfection. Throughout the year, the temperature generally varies between 64°F and 97°F (18°C and 36°C) but rarely becomes extreme, which means the limes can grow in comfortable conditions.

GROWING TECHNIQUES

AGRICULTURE MOTIVATED BY A SOCIAL CONSCIENCE

Because he was conscious of the health of both his family and other people, Tomas decided to stop using pesticides, herbicides and fungicides when growing his citrus fruit. He now uses sustainable methods that follow the Mayan lunar cycle. Tomas is aware of the adverse effects that modern agriculture’s most widespread chemicals can have and aims to grow 100% organic produce within the next few years. That is not all he is doing to sustainably manage his crops, however, as he is meticulously studying evapotranspiration and precipitation so he can adapt his irrigation schedule and avoid overusing water.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ACTION

A COMMITMENT MADE TO LAST

What characterizes Tomas more than anything else is his resilience. Hurricane Gilberto destroyed much of his farm in 1988. He had to rebuild everything from scratch and is proud of all the work that has been done over the years.
Tomas is committed to farming methods that are more environmentally friendly and healthier for everyone who grows and consumes the produce. He is diversifying his crops to encourage a more varied ecosystem that will naturally control parasites without any need for chemical inputs. As a devoted family man, Tomas’s greatest pleasures are seeing his children play in his fields in total safety and passing on his values to them so that they may one day follow his lead.
